An excercise in excercise August 23, 2006

For those of you who know me you know that rotund isn’t an apt description of me.  In fact, I would have to lose the combined weight of a couple of toddlers to get down to morbidly obese.  Recently I went on the WebMD weight-loss web site and put in height and weight so they could tell me my BMI.  As soon as I hit “enter” my entire screen started flashing a warning and a voice called out from my computer that said “Sir, put the fork down now!”  Then a message came up that told me I didn’t have a BMI - it was more like a specific gravity.  After that I decided to take my health more seriously.  I decided to start eating better and excercising, and also to find out what in the world a BMI was (It stands for Body Mass Index and it turns out it is another tool to tell you exactly how fat you are!).  Also, in another fit of insanity I decided to share my progress with all of you each Wednesday.  Call it cyber-accountability.  So, here are the changes I have made so far:

                      1.  My family joined the Y (You may begin singing anytime)

                      2.  I’m working out twice a day (5:30 lifting & pm cardio)

                      3.  Changing my diet

                      4.  Going to bed earlier (5:00 am comes very early)

So, I bet you are wondering what is the net effect of all these changes.  Well, I’ve only been on this schedule for a week, but here is what I’ve noticed so far:

                     1.  I’m fitting into my clothes better.

                     2.  I used to get really tired in the afternoon, but now I’m really tired all the time (still adjusting to the new schedule).

                     3.  Last week when I walked up a flight of stairs I would grunt - Now I scream!

                     4.  I lost 8 pounds

In future posts I’ll get into more of what I’m doing from a diet and excercise standpoint.  I also will post how much I excercise and what other benefits I see that aren’t weight related.  If you want to join me in my cyber accountability for health or weight loss just post your progress in the comments section each week after I post.  Thanks

Congratulations on such a worthy endeavor! Keep up the good work. I can not sympathize with you on this one (as you know), but I can empathize and encourage you in this lifestyle change.

Tony as one of your family members and a personal trainer to boot, I will offer this advise to your current regiment. BMI was set back in the day when people actually worked for a liveing before technology. Set that aside and get your body fat % checked. Muscle weighs more than fat, if you don’t believe me jump in the water, if you float you are fat, if you sink you have lean muscle mass. You should figure out how many calories you are taking in a day and how many you are burning as well you want to be taking in slightly less than you need for the day, this will also help with the energy problem. Next, switch the cardio and lifting sessions around, while you glycogen stores are low in the morning is prime time to burn fat. Take in about 65%protein, 25%carbs, and 10% healthy fats every day. Also a good book that will help you is Body for Life by Bill Phillips, get it at Traget as it is cheapest there. Hope this helps. Your cousin, John trainingindy@hotmail.com if you have any questions. Since you have that look on your face, it is Charlotte’s son.

Thanks John. One of the reasons I keep to this sched is so Jen and I can work out together in the evenings. BTW, I know who you are.

6. It’s a start… « Joyful Notes - August 29, 2006

[...] About a month ago, our family joined the local YMCA, and we have done our best to faithfully go work out.  Tony’s working out twice a day ~ once at 5:30 a.m. for weights, and once in the afternoon for cardio.  I go once a day, about 4 times a week to do cardio and a little weight training.  So this morning, I spent 20 minutes on the treadmill, then worked my shoulders, triceps and abs.  When I stepped on the scale once I was home, I was down FOUR POUNDS!  WOW!  I guess it’s finally paying off.  Tony’s doing great, too, and you can read all about that here.  There’s just some kind of motivation, for me at least, about having those Y workers sitting at the front desk and knowing you have come in to do your workout!    [...]
