Weekly Update on “the effort” August 30, 2006

Well, if it’s Wednesday it must be the day to update the health issue.  Well, I must say this has been a busy week.  Everyday I went to the gym and worked out twice a day (with the exception of Sunday because I only do cardio on Sun).  A lot of calories burned and muscles aching and today was the payoff.  This morning I slowly crept to the scale so it wouldn’t hear me coming and brace itself.  Then I set the balance to the right 50 pound area and began the slide.  With each increment the scale passed anticipation raised. How much would I lose?  What would be the incredible number I could report to you today?  Well, here it is folks - One pound lost!!

OK, so I didn’t exactly burn up the scales this week, but I’m not discouraged.  First of all that was one pound less than I weighed last week.  Secondly, I really didn’t expect to lose all that much because of the weight training I have been doing.  Thirdly (and penultimately), I have received a few nice comments about how much better I’m looking.  Fourthly (and ultimately), I have noticed quite a few positive health changes already.

What are these health changes you ask?  Allow me to enumerate:

1.  Increased endurance - I’ve had to up the intensity of all of my workouts because what was killing me two weeks ago is not challenging me today.

2.  The slight beginnings of definition have begun to show up in my muscles.

3.  Lower blood sugars- My blood sugar this morning was 121.  Two weeks ago that would have been in the 200’s.

4.  Increased Flexibility - I can do “Head and Shoulders/ Knees and Toes” with hardly any difficulty (except for actually touching the toes).

Tony, I hate to be the bearer of bad news but you are over-working your body. Please listen to me and this will go alot smoother as I do this for a living now. When you are working your body in any capasity you are tearing down the facia of the muscles, you are giving it stimulant to grow stronger. It is when you are at rest the muscle repairs itself with nutrients and actually recovers, if you are working as hard as you say you are not giving your body the rest it needs to recover thus over-training. Try this if you like and your wife can as well. Try lifting moderate weight on a different muscle group on Mon, Wed, and Fri, and doing interval cardio training on Tues, Thurs, and Sat.. Enjoy Sun. as a day of rest. Let me know if I can help. John

John,
I really appreciate the insight. However, there are a few things you should know. The first is I am an extremely insulin resistant type II diabetic. I am taking 3 meds for my diabetes (2 of those at the max. doses available). For me to control my blood sugar two workouts a day are necessary. There is precious little I can do from a medicine standpoint short of injecting insulin which is not what I want to do. The second is I am not an 18 yr. old kid that has to throw every weight around the gym. I am a 35 yr. old man that as Clint Eastwood said “knows his limitations.” Third, I haven’t been a slug my whole life. I am a former athelete and have spent time in the gym and I know how to target muscle groups and let others get their needed rest. The workouts I am doing are extemely moderate and designed to allow my body to burn fat. The last is I have talked all of this over with my doctor and he is on board with what I am doing. You’ve got to understand that much of what I write is tounge-in-cheek or hyperbole to set up what I think is a funny line. I think people would rather read about the scale “bracing itself” than about all the minutae of what excercises I do or food I eat. I mean I find that boring so I am sure you would too. Again, thanks for the interest, but I am very comfortable where I am right now.

5. increditony - September 8, 2006

Dude,
I have been out of town this week so I haven’t been able to write a post. I will let you know soon. I can’t put on a speedo just yet because they don’t have their products out in tarp sizes.
